Neil Bray Fastest at Opening Autotest

Neil set the fastest time on the first test in his Mini and was never headed all day. He was chased by a day long battle between Michael Leete and Chris Sanders, which was narrowly won by Michael in his Nova to win Class A. The other class was the province of David Alderson driving son Liam’s new Skoda.

We had a super early summer day for the first autotest of the year at Upper Caldecote. There were a few well-known faces missing, but we welcomed a couple of fresh ones. Liam Alderson had his new Skoda trials car and David Thompson entered his VW Buggy for his first autotest, the car sporting new barrels and pistons since incurring heavy oil consumption on the Lands End. Alan Davies had laid out a super collection of tests, none of which involved any reversing. The drivers briefing contained some very important information, warning about the dangers of straying too far from the designated area, as the organisers accepted no responsibility if you got to close to the bee hive!

Neil Bray went into an immediate lead and was not headed all day. He was chased by Chris Sanders, sharing his usual Polo with Martin Cheshire, and Michael Leete who was revelling in the grip afforded by a brand new set of front tyres. Any hopes Arnold Lane or Martin Cheshire had of catching them evaporated on test four, when they both picked up penalties. This was a tricky test as the same fate befell David Thompson and Liam Alderson.

Tom Goggin had a good run in the morning and was close behind the flying Skoda of David Alderson. Unfortunately Tom had a double wrong course on test 8 which put him out of contention for the class which was won by David. An excellent season opener, role on the next one on the 18th July.

Liam Alderson's new Skoda trials car is the ex-Frank Burton machine. Liam was passengering Frank recently and heard he couldn’t get on with a tin top and was going to re-purchase his old Marlin. The Skoda had all the right trials things done to it so after a quick word with Dad Liam snapped it up. He plans to concentrate on local events for a while but once he gets the hang of it he will probably have a go at a Classic or two. David had better watch out!
